"I collect ducks because they make me happy.  Life is too short not to be happy.  I can get caught up in the thrill of the hunt because I am a duck hunter, but more than anything, sharing the ducks with people is what I enjoy about them."  --Dan Magee

Dan Magee of Jackson, Missippi (USA) has been collecting rubber duckies for eight years. Later on he started to collect plastic duckies also.

Dan loves ducks for their aesthetic qualities. He hangs out with a lot of artists and has culivated a keen visual sense that is apparent in the way he has carefully arranged his ducks by size and color and by the dramatic way he has decorated his duck room. Yes, folks,  Dan's lucky ducks have a room all to themselves!

It's not just the visual and tactile qualites of our rubber duck friends that draws Dan to collecting. Being a people person, Dan likes helping young collectors and he also likes meeting other collectors and learning how other people live in different places around the country and around the world.

Dan's Devil Duck Art

This is not a a Photoshop trick. Dan loves devils ducks so much that he has over 75 of them. He puts them to good use in his duck photography.

When I first met Dan he sent me a photo of his rubber duck collection. The ducks were all in a small pile on his countertop. Dan was in the process of making a little bookshelf, what he called the "duck hotel", for his collection. I wrote him a few months later to ask how his bookshelf was coming along and he said that he had to rethink things because a bookshelf wasn't going to be big enough. A few months later the Duck Room was born.

Dan created his duck room with loving care. He built his display shelves himself and painted the room orange. Actually he painted the shelves twice. He bought some Ralph Lauren paint, but the paint stuck to the ducks. No good!! So Dan started all over again and repainted the shelves with different paint.

Dan's friend Patrick Grogan is an up and coming artist in Mississippi. He loves vintage rubber toys including rubber ducks. He made this painting of rubber ducks (and a few rubber chickens) especially for Dan

Dan worked long and hard to build the bookshelf below. Finally, it was done and he was ready to bring it in the house. There was only one problem. It didn't fit!! Oops. He had to take it back outside and saw it down to size. Looks like it worked out pretty well in the end!

Dan says that he loves Duckplanet because it's a great place to meet other collectors and learn about ducks. He loves the photos, duck alerts and all the tips about where to find new ducks. He also likes knowing that he's not the only person who is obsessed with ducks. Dan says that some of the friendships he's made through Duckplanet are for life and he and his friends enjoy talking about what's been said on Duckplanet. Being a part of Duckplanet makes Dan feel like, "I'm a member of something that is good and positive and helps the world." High praise from a guy who works in Emergency Management and helps people in need every day.
